Cain-Sloan Vintage Fox Wrap

This luxurious piece was sold at the infamous Cain-Sloan Department store in Nashville, Tennessee. Cain-Sloan was founded in 1903, and was the location of one of the earliest sit-in protests by young Black Americans in Nashville during the Civil Rights Movement. In December 1959, future Congressman John Lewis led a group of students to the department store's lunch counter. Historical accounts of the event indicate the students were politely asked to leave, and they did without resistance. The next year the march on Nashville's courthouse took place, followed by the admission by Mayor Ben West that lunch counters "ought to be desegregated". Cain-Sloan and other downtown Nashville stores finally made their lunch counters open all races in May 1960.
